Outlook and Hotmail account guide: OAuth2, IMAP and delivery

Compare Outlook and Hotmail accounts by login method, OAuth2, IMAP, POP3, recovery details and delivery fields before choosing an email product.

Choose by the email access you need

An Outlook or Hotmail address alone does not establish protocol access, subscription benefits or organization management features. Decide whether you need browser access, an email client or programmatic mail access, then check whether the listing explicitly supports that method.

Read protocol and authorization specifications separately

Listings may mention passwords, OAuth2 materials, client_id, refresh_token, IMAP or POP3. One item is not a guarantee that all access methods are available. Check the supported authorization method, application requirements and delivered fields. Ask on-site support about features that are not described.

Match each delivered field to its purpose

Read the documented field order and distinguish the account, password, recovery email and authorization materials before use. If promised fields are missing or differ from the description, keep the order number and error evidence with sensitive information hidden and report the problem within the support window. A mailbox does not include a paid Microsoft 365 plan unless explicitly stated.

Will a password work in every email client?

Do not assume that. Check the client's authorization requirements against the protocols and access methods specified by the listing.

Is Microsoft 365 included?

Only an explicitly listed plan should be treated as included. An address and login details alone do not establish a paid subscription.

How do I interpret multiple delivery fields?

Use the field order and instructions for that product. Ask support if the format is unclear rather than treating authorization materials as a password.
